A Special Terry Fox Moment

Blewett staff and students took time to honour the legacy of Terry Fox on Friday, October 2. Mr. Mush organized a Terry Fox Run for each learning group in the school.  (He might want to do some better math next time as he ran the whole time with each group.  He might be sore tomorrow!)

The day was made extra special by grade 5 student Penny Garbula.  When Mr. Mush announced the Terry Fox Run to the school, he said he hoped that each person in the school would consider donating a "Toonie for Terry".  And as we got closer to today's run, the toonies were coming in.  Penny took the challenge to heart. With her parent's permission, Penny took fifty dollars out of her own savings and donated it to the Terry Fox Foundation through the school.  She said that she wanted to start taking her allowance and birthday money and doing something important with it.  Her grandmother's friend died of cancer and she also thought of former Blewett Principal Mary-Ann Gaschnitz. "This feels right to me," said Penny when asked about her generous gift.

As a school we raised over $476 for the Terry Fox Foundation.  Students learned that Terry ran 42km per day during his Marathon of Hope.  That's the distance from Nelson to Castlegar.  We ran for 15 minutes and got a good taste of the strength it takes to follow through on the goals we set out for ourselves.  We saw a little bit of Terry in our students today.  For this, we are grateful.

Thanks for your time and your donations.  Every bit makes a difference.
