Fall is Upon Us

Image

Hello Families,

Well September is wrapping up and we can feel the temperatures shifting further away from summer. I love the drive to my hometown of Grand Forks this time of year as I pass through a sea of golden leaves.

Our students had the opportunity in the past two weeks to participate in a few activities. The Terry Fox Marathon of Hope was a great success with students and staff raising over $250 toward cancer research. Students wore name tags displaying who they were running for that may have been touched by cancer. It was a heartfelt day to say the least.

As part of our goals for inclusion we were fortunate to have guest speaker Michael Bortolotto join us to talk about “resilience”. Michael is an international motivational speaker who was diagnosed with cerebral Palsy at an early age. His wisdom, humour, and storytelling engaged all of our grade 1-6 students and staff. Thank you, Michael!

I’d like to thank the Kokanee Cr. Interpretive Centre staff for hosting another great learning experience for our students. Classes learned about the life cycle of the Kokanee salmon and its environment. They joined in on the annual spawning tour that included a fun theatrical show, dissections, and more. Thanks for the lively and engaging activities with the kids!

Resilience:

For many kids, transitioning back to school from the summer can be difficult. I’d like to share with you some ideas for promoting resilience and setting your kids up for success as they head back to school.

BC School Fruit and Vegetable Nutritional Program:

We are very lucky at Blewett School to be involved in the BC Fruits and Vegetable program.  We receive fresh fruit and vegetables approximately every three weeks and distribute it to the students.  Again this year we will be receiving milk for Grades K-6.  If you do not want your child to participate in this program, please contact Jane to let her know.

Parent Volunteers:

We welcome parents as volunteers in our school.  Your talents and attention enrich the lives of our children. Thanks for caring.  Because the school is a public institution, there are certain expectations we hold of our volunteers.

It is the responsibility of each volunteer to . . .

  • submit a criminal records check
  • attend a Volunteer Orientation session – usually with the principal
  • consult with your child’s teacher to set up times to come in
  • sign in at the office when you come in to the school – see Jane
  • support the work of the teacher in the classroom
  • if you see a behavior which concerns you, please let the teacher know
  • avoid touching children
  • respect the confidential nature of the school setting – please discuss a child’s behavior only with the child’s teacher or with the principal, not with others outside the school setting
  • recognize the gifts of all children

Have a great week!
