Pink Shirt Day and Random Acts of Kindness
Spring is upon us!
- Circle of Courage Theme: We are wrapping up our theme of generosity and will be introducing our next theme of “Mastery”. We are asking students to reflect on all the things they are good at and things they want to get better at. We remind students that failing is a part of learning and is an important part of getting better at something.
- Winter Activities: We have finished our winter activities. Cross country skiing and downhill skiing went well. This year our grades 1,2, 3 students received lessons at the Indoor Soccer Club. Thank you to all parent volunteers to make these events a success. This year, we gave all families the option to pay on a sliding scale which included full subsidy for families in need of support. We were able subsidize using our Family Affordability Fund to help reduce costs for all families.
- Intermediate Basketball: Our older students have started their basketball units and are getting prepared for their big tournament on April 17th .
-
Pink Shirt Day: Students and staff have been doing multi-age activities as a lead up to our pink shirt day. Our theme of kindness has generated many acts to help students feel they belong. We had many students participate in our assembly in a discussion around how to be an “upstander” when you see someone being excluded or bullied. We had many brave students (k-6) stand up in front of the school to share poems or just give their thoughts on how to be kind to others. We remind parents that we as adults can help our students resolve conflicts by listening without judgement or solving their problems for them. Role modeling and listening without judgement goes a long way.
- Valentines Day Dance: Thank you to the parents who helped put together this fun event for our students. All students from K-6 had the option to join the fun in the gym. There were some very dressed up students dancing and limboing.
- School Fees: The fees are set at an estimated level that will strictly result in cost recovery. Next year’s school fees are set at $45.00 per student. BES will provide subsidy for any family that is experiencing financial hardship to pay these fees.
- Mulch Fundraiser: We have been approved for a mulch donation from Kalesnikoff Lumber. All students will participate. Date for sales coming soon (some time in May)
- Egg Drop Challenge / Rocket Ship Challenge:
- Stay tuned for information on our egg drop challenge happening in May!
- Spring Activities:
- We are currently organizing for Tennis lessons at the Nelson Tennis association courts at LV Rogers Secondary School. Coach Matt and his staff provide a great introduction to tennis with mini games and activities for all ages.
- Numeracy: We have been focusing our strategies on our priority learners which inturn helps all students - Students engage in “number talks”, mental math operations, and problem solving. Our staff have also been participating in district led “learning bursts” for numeracy.
- Literacy: Our teachers continue to focus on Adreanne Gear writing power strategies to develop interesting sentences, paragraphs and stories.
- Fostering Literacy program: Volunteers are being trained to help with our literacy program. These volunteers (family members of our students) will be spending time with our student to help develop fluency in their reading.
If you know someone who is looking to register their Kindergarten aged child for September, please encourage them to do so soon!
