The Power of Story Telling

Image

Story Telling: As part of our focus on literacy, Blewett Elementary School invited local story teller, "Mike Funergy" to share tales that engaged our students in fun and imaginitive ways. Students learned that a story does not have to be told the same way every time. A story can change each time its told and each student has the ability to tell a good story through oral storytelling, songs, jokes, and more. Students learned about where stories come from, how they are told, and what the story says about various cultures. Studies show that listening to storie help to improve comprehension and recall. We hope to focus more on story telling moving forward.

Fostering Literacy Program: We are in our third week of this program and we're alreay seeing the impact on students' reading experiences! This program focuses on sparking students’ excitement for reading, building their confidence, and developing essential literacy skills. Thank you to the handful of family volunteers that come in each week to read, play literacy games, and help our readers grow!

Circle of Courage - "Mastery": Our multi-age groups worked together this month to discuss the power of “yet”. Students shared with the class what they are good at and what they have not mastered “yet”. The power of "yet" helps kids move from a rigid mindset to a more growth mindset. Our next theme in the Circle of Courage involves “independence”.

Spring Activities: Tennis was a hit! Thank you to Matt Martin (Nelson Tennis Association) who did a wonderful job engaging our students at each grade level with his friendly and fun coaching style. From Kindi to grade 6, students played on the best courts in town at LVR Secondary School. Fun was had by all through rain and shine!

Scholastic Book Fair: There was lots of excitement around the bookfair this year. We sold about $3500 worth of books and games. This qualified us for $1500 worth of library resources! Thank you, BPAC for your generous support of $350 to help us meet our goal!

Student Led Conferences: Students led their families around the school to show off their learning and fun projects. Thank you to the families who were able to join us.

Keep in the loop with what's happening at Blewett Elementary School through your classroom Dojo, monthly newsletters, and periodic blogs here on our website. Please remember that your questions and concerns are always welcome to be discussed with a phone call to your child's teacher or principal.

All the best,

Jordon Konken - Principal of Blewett ELementary School
